What the River Keeps by Cheryl Bostrom

Introduction

Hildy Nybo filled many roles in her life… a sister, daughter, and scientist. She was an introvert who seemed deeply conflicted and troubled by a history of lost memories and dysfunctional relationships. She escaped from her home life as soon as she was old enough to leave. The day finally came when she knew she would return home. The temptation was an opening for a dream job she could not resist. The job was made sweeter by knowing she would be working with a boss who was an older man that she highly respected in her field of study.

Taking this job would mean coming back to a family, home, acquaintances, and river where she grew up. Hildy would have to face her mother who was suffering from dementia and the absence of her father who had mysteriously disappeared when she was quite young. As she traveled back into this world of childhood family and friends she knew that this would be a very big challenge.

Story Summary

As a scientist, Hildy Nybo was called in to help with the re-wilding of the river where she grew up. The plan was to open up the dam from the lake that currently existed and let the land and river go back to it’s original ecosystem. The team’s goal was to allow the native salmon and other wildlife to return to the area. She would be part of the team that would be bringing this to fruition. It would be an exciting adventure for her as a biologist. The downfall was that she would have to return to a place where she had lost many childhood memories. She would have to face family and friends. She knew it would not be easy but it would be important. The remarkable insights and events from this decision to return home would overwhelm her but it would also change her forever.

Once Hildy returned home she began settling into a her cabin. The cabin sat on a multi-cabin property her parents had run for many years for summer vacationers and seasonal hunters and fishermen. Not long after she arrived a local artist, Miranda Rimmer, rented an adjacent cabin for her pottery studio. Hildy kept her distance for awhile from her new neighbor. She began venturing toward Miranda when she noticed a carpenter coming in to work each day. Luke, the carpenter, had agreed to come and help with construction to get the studio ready for the public. Luke was Miranda’s brother.

Luke carried emotional scars from his own tragic story. Several years prior he lost his wife and two daughters in a dreadful accident. It had brought him to his knees and he had changed his life completely. His old life and career was too much of a reminder of his precious family’s tragic deaths. Luke recognized a kindred soul in Hildy and they built a slow friendship over time that dismantled Hildy’s emotional walls slowly. As troubling pieces of her past surfaced, Hildy dared to wonder if she could banish the shadows that have covered her and follow her own river’s course to freedom.

As we travel through Hildy’s story we have moments of real life events stepping into the forefront. We see the real Elwha River and an authentic camp for hunters and fishermen with it’s seasonal turns. Cheryl shares stories of an older couple who are running the camp and a tradition of dancing that brought the community together. It was a true joy to visit this little camp and river and all it’s lovely cast of characters.

My Personal Thoughts

I am still pondering this story 5 months after reading it. It is a beautiful story of restoration and faith. There are elements of redemption and forgiveness as Hildy works out her thoughts and emotions about her family and others close to her. I love that Hildy is an introvert. I related to her a great deal in how she used systems and coping mechanisms to keep her moving forward. It would have been so easy for her to retreat into herself and her little cabin. She became braver and braver as the story progressed.

Hildy is such a lovely young woman. I was able to really engage with her story. I wanted to give her a hug and tell her it would all be ok on several occasions. I just cringed with her as she had to take each new step toward finding freedom from childhood trauma. Seeing her mother struggle with dementia upon her return felt like such a shock from who her mother used to be. I loved how Bostrom incorporated the struggle of having a loved one with dementia and how hard each day felt with the challenges that come with that diagnosis.

I must say that I have been delighted by Cheryl Bostrom’s novels. They are deeply realistic and introspective. Her character development and descriptions of the natural world are absolutely riveting. I am able to imagine the scenes she is describing beautifully. Her characters are diverse and sometimes neurodivergent. She does not gloss over struggles and loss with her characters. There is always a deep spiritual struggle in her main characters. She allows us in to see the hand of God at work in their lives. I think that is my favorite part of how she unfolds her stories. God is always the foundation.

Bostrom brings us a beautiful challenging fictional story couched in a real event that took place on the Elwha River in the Pacific Northwest around 2012-2014. Take a moment to look that up or just click the link in the previous sentence to check it out.

If you are looking for a beautiful gift for Christmas I highly recommend Cheryl’s stories for the readers in your life. All three of her novels are engaging and hopeful in the midst of deep hurt and real struggles. She has won several prestigious awards for her writing and it is well deserved. She is a true gem in the Christian Fiction world. If you want to know more about Cheryl Bostrom you can check out her blog or Substack pages.

What is Covenant Theology? by Ryan M. McGraw

McGraw gives us a Covenant Theology 101 basic course in this book. He walks us through three basic types of covenants (redemption, works, grace). This knowledge shows us how understanding the covenants is important in the life of every Christian. It is not a simplistic book. McGraw beautifully explains what Covenant Theology is in a way that is straight forward, thoroughly biblical, and wonderfully engaging.

The Bible is the Metanarrative of God. A metanarrative is a grand story that is self-legitimizing. From Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 we see one overarching story of God and His love for us. A biblical covenant is a binding agreement between God and His people. Covenants are how God has related to humans since the Garden of Eden. Covenants can help us connect the dots for this grand Metanarrative of God. Understanding the concept of Covenant Theology can guide us as we study His Word. It is important to know scripture and to know what we believe based on the Word of God. It is crucial that we take every thought captive and know what the Truth is. Covenant Theology or the study of the Covenants of God can help us clarify that Truth.

There are several important covenants that we see as we read the Bible.

  • Noahic covenant – made after the flood with Noah. This is where we see the rainbow promise that God would never flood the earth again.
  • Abrahamic – instated with Abraham promised that God would make a people from him to bless the entire world.
  • Mosaic – pertains to the giving of the Law (the 10 Commandments and all the Levitical laws and ceremonies)
  • Davidic – covenant with David and promised there would be a king on the throne from the tribe of Judah forever.
  • New and Final Covenant through Jesus promising salvation to all who would believe and it was sealed with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Even if you are fully aware of the covenants I just listed above, this book is a great resource for even the most experienced Christian. I have been a Christian for many many years. I was able to gain more clarity on in regard to the different kinds of covenants McGraw discussed. My understanding of the importance of why we need to be in a covenant relationship with God was deepened and solidified. Without God’s willingness to reach out to us and bring us into a covenant relationship with Him we would ultimately be separated from Him for eternity. His desire to be in a covenant relationship with us, when reciprocated, saves us! As we know God better we desire to be with Him more and more. He longs for us to be in a relationship with Him willingly. Covenants are a crucial part of that process.

I would recommend this book if you are interested in understanding more about covenants and the bigger picture. I believe it can bring you to a fuller understanding of His sovereign plan for mankind. This book be would be a great resource for a small group study or even a full church study. There are thoughtful questions at the end of each chapter to aid in discussion. I enjoyed my time in this study. This resource can serve to deepen my own private study time. I believe what I have learned can spark important conversations with fellow Christians and help me engage more meaningfully in Bible study groups in our church.

At the end of this book McGraw gives a great list of where to go next to find out more and continue your study of this topic. I plan to take him up on a few of his recommendations for 2026.

For a quick overview on the definition of covenants I really like The Bible Project’s page on covenants and their importance between God and humans. Personal Thoughts on the Story

Erica Vetsch has done it again! She has written a story that is well researched, shares Christ in a way that is not awkward or pushy and she has given us great characters to draw us into a beautiful story. This story is one I have been waiting to read from this series. I think one of my most favorite characters that has been in the background until now is Bertie. We get to see him in action in this one. His character is quiet and unassuming but he always knows just how to act and what to say to get the information he needs. He is kind and generous in a world full of selfishness and greed.

Likewise, Philippa is a true defender of the weak and hurting. She has a heart for doing the right thing and a way about her that puts those around her at ease. She is a beautiful strong woman who has been changed by a mighty Savior and her heart for people is truly a gift from the Lord.

I love that Vetsch has continued to develop these characters and is telling their stories. I love the twist on the idea of a regency novel as she has added spycraft, action and adventure, and seeing the darker side of society. Vetsch pulls no punches and in the end we know that the good guy always wins. The best part is watching it all unfold for that satisfying ending. I love Erica’s books and I think you will, too.

Sunday Matters by Paul David Tripp

Paul David Tripp has become one of my favorite devotional writers. His style is thoughtful, concise and always filled with important scriptural principles. The typical format of his books includes a scripture or quote and a daily reflection. He closes each day with scripture references to dig into on your own, sometimes a prayer and/or a family oriented activity or discussion.

This particular devotional includes fifty two devotions from Paul David Tripp which can be read every Sunday for a year, every day for 52 days or, if you like, just read them as you feel like reading them. The primary focus of this book is the importance of the Sunday exercise of gathering together as a church family. He shares 52 thoughts on why this is important and how you can engage with other believers to worship and grow together as the Bride of Christ. We are not meant to go through our lives as Lone Ranger Christians. We need the church and the imperfect people God has brought together in each fellowship to pray for one another, encourage one another, teach each other and so much more.

PDT has a gentle approach but he does not mince words. There are plenty of times that I have felt convicted by what he is sharing. I am also always encouraged and strengthened in my faith as I work through the truths that he shares. In a world filled with conflict and shallow thinking this is a breath of fresh air and a true joy to read. As the people of God we should be glad for one another and excited to come together each week. We should look forward to spending the first day of each week in worship together through the preaching of the Word, singing, prayer, praise, and fellowship. It is what we were made for.

As someone who has attended church all my life this was still an insightful look at why church is important. For those who struggle to know why this is true this might be just the book you are looking for. Maybe you know someone that would enjoy this one for the new year or you could be the one that needs to hear this message to strengthen your resolve to be more present in church in the coming year.

For more information on Paul David Tripp and his writing you can check out his website or read some articles from him on Crossway.com I requested this book to review as part of the crossway review program. I was only asked to give an honest review.

You might also be interested in the annual sale Crossway has in January (1st t0 15th) on all ebooks and audiobooks. It is a good time to pick up some great stuff at very affordable prices to spur you on to a deeper walk with Christ, love and good works for a new year.

Make the Most of Your Productivity by Ana Avila

I try to read a new book at least once a year on productivity, organization, and/or minimalism. Ana Avila has written a fantastic book on the topic of productivity. So many books on productivity today are based on business principles of doing more, going further, selling more, and climbing the proverbial success ladder. Most of them are written with the world’s vision of success as the end goal. The call of Christ on the life of a believer should look different. Avila’s book takes this point of view.

Avila looks at productivity from a Biblical perspective. Our daily tasks and goals should reflect our faith. We should seek to be good stewards of the time and resources God has given us. Our end goal should ultimately be to glorify God in all we do. Productivity is not a bad idea. It just looks different when we shift our focus from the world’s perspective to God’s perspective. Everyone can benefit from this book. Productivity is for everyone no matter their role or stage and age in life.

Avila divides her philosophy into three basic sections. She shares why productivity is important and the spiritual foundations for it. The second part is broken down into time, limits, decisions, focus, habits, and tools. She has done her research and shares some great resources and thoughts to encourage and motivate the reader to be more purposeful with their days. The final section is the practical section on how to implement changes to be more intentional for Christ in daily living.

I have read a lot of productivity books over the years but this one felt very different. Her book is one I will be rereading and implementing for 2025. I am looking at my days differently after reading this book. I want my days and work to be edifying to my family and glorifying to God. Since choosing to come back home as a housewife I have struggled with loving the work I do on some days but with Avila’s perspective and encouragement I see that what I do on a daily basis is important if I let the Lord guide my days. Even doing the dishes and laundry feels different from this perspective.

I loved this book very much and recommend it for anyone who wants to make their days more God centered. You will be encouraged to seek the things that really matter in this life. Seek after God and strive to glorify Him in all you do. Put this book on your list of books that are sure to encourage you and put you on a new path for a new year ahead.

I look forward to more from Ana Avila. She writes for The Gospel Coalition and for the Spanish version of the same name.

I requested this book as part of Crossway’s review program. I was not asked to read or give a positive review of this book.
